After running out of old Tolkien Professor and Hog’s Head podcasts, I’ve started listening to Walter Edgar’s Journal, a South Carolina history and culture broadcast, on my iPod on the way to work.  This link is to the archive of his shows, where you can download past episodes as .mp3s.  Some of my favorites so far are: “Voices of Our Ancestors”, about Gullah linguistics; “Preserving the Roadside Stands of Sweetgrass Basket-Makers”; “Dorothea Benton Frank: Folly Beach, about her newest book and the history of DuBose and Dorothy Heyward that inspired it; “City of Heroes: The Great Charleston Earthquake of 1886”; and “Mary Chestnut’s Civil War Epic”. The material is all really fascinating, and it’s a real pleasure to listen to Edgar’s deep voice and soft-spoken Southern accent.
